Age 5+ and Above
We offer open group lessons daily at 2PM from May-September. With the open group you get the same lesson content as a private, but you will be placed with anyone else who decides to sign up for the lesson. You could end up having a lesson with one other person or possibly 4 others. It’s not recommended to sign children up for the group lesson unless they can comfortably handle a surfboard on their own in the ocean. The first 15-25 minutes of the lesson are spent on land perfecting your pop-up as well as an ocean safety briefing. The rest of the time is spent in the water putting your new skills to the test!

Getting Ready For A Surf Lesson
You need to arrive at the shop 10 minutes prior to the start of your surf lesson. We offer parking validation for up to 2 hours when you park at Promenade Mall underground garage. We also have a safe storage area for you to keep your belongings in and a shower so that you can rinse off after your surf lesson.
Equipment is included in your surf lesson, but you will need to bring a few items as well. If you forget, or can’t purchase them ahead of time, our surf shop will also have them for sale.
- Bathing suit or board shorts to wear under your wetsuit
- Towel to dry-off after the surf lesson
- Sunscreen for sun protection
- Bottled water to hydrate after the surf lesson
It’s also a good idea to take a quick look at our blog post regarding etiquette prior to your lesson. Your instructor will cover it too but it’s good info to keep in mind while in the water!
Best Time To Take A Surf Lesson
Almost anytime is a great time to surf. You will surf slow-rolling white water so you don’t have to be a good swimmer. Generally speaking though, mornings are preferred because more often than not the on-shore winds pick up after noon, making the surface of the ocean choppy. Whereas the mornings usually have calm surface conditions. A medium tide is also preferred, at very high tides the waves can become shorebreak and there might not be much room to ride the waves. On the other hand, very low tides can cause the waves to be steep and closing out into shallow water.
Our friendly staff and experienced instructors are knowledgeable watermen and women with a talent for teaching San Diego Surf Lessons. If you have any concern about the waves and conditions prior to your lesson give us a call and we’ll be happy to get you set up with the best conditions we can find for you!
All our instructors maintain the highest safety certifications available: they are trained and certified in CPR, First Aid, and Water Safety by American Red Cross and will be beside you at all times. However, you must be older than 5 years old in order to learn to surf. We recommend a private lesson which provides the most flexibility and the best learning environment for you to focus on specific goals, learn proper technique and have fun in the ocean.
